Holidays in Term Time

Amendments to the law in September 2013 make it clear that headteachers and school Governors may no longer grant any leave of holiday absence during term time unless there are exceptional circumstances. Exceptional circumstances where schools may grant a holiday in term time may include:

The regulations set out the procedures for issuing penalty notices (fines) to each parent who fails to ensure their children’s regular attendance at school. Parents must, from 1 September 2013, pay £60 within 21 days or £120 within 28 days. This brings attendance penalty notices into line with other types of penalty notices and allows local authorities to act faster on prosecutions. Unauthorised holidays during term time are included.

If any parent wishes to request leave of absence and they believe they have exceptional circumstances, this needs to be put in writing to the school governors for consideration.
